Starting July 21, 2025, Russia will implement an important change to its migration legislation.
Foreign specialists performing installation, commissioning, maintenance, or repair work on imported equipment will now be able to extend their work visas without leaving the country.
What’s Changing
Until now, foreign installation specialists had to leave Russia and reapply for a new visa to continue their work.
Under the new rule, they can apply for an extension directly inside Russia, reducing downtime and administrative costs.
Key details include:
- Work visas for installation purposes may be issued as single- or double-entry.
- The initial visa is valid for up to 3 months, with a one-time extension of up to 90 days.
- The extension must be processed through the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs (MVD) of Russia.
- Standard processing time: up to 15 business days.
- Health insurance with at least €30,000 coverage is mandatory.
Who Qualifies
The new regulation applies to:
- Employees of foreign companies supplying equipment to Russia.
- Installation, technical supervision, and service engineers performing related work.
A work permit is not required, but the company must provide:
- A contract for the equipment supply or service.
- Technical documentation confirming the nature of the work.
How to Apply for an Extension
- Submit an application to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD).
- Provide supporting documents — valid visa, passport, work contract, and technical assignment.
- Pay the applicable state fee.
- Await processing (up to 15 business days).
Foreign specialists must also complete, within 30 days of entry:
- Medical examination,
- Fingerprint registration, and
- Photograph submission.
Limitations and Penalties
- Only one extension is permitted under this rule.
- Overstaying after the extension period may result in fines of up to 7,000 RUB for individuals and 800,000 RUB for companies.
Why This Matters
This update reflects Russia’s ongoing effort to streamline migration and technical work procedures, making it easier for international businesses to support equipment installation and servicing projects without repeated visa renewals abroad.
It’s a practical step toward creating a more predictable and efficient environment for foreign specialists and their employers.
