Comprehensive Guide to Health Insurance in Germany for Expats and Students

Germany's health insurance system, known as Krankenversicherung, mandates coverage for all residents. There are two primary types of health insurance: statutory health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung - GKV) and private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung - PKV). Your employment status and income determine which type of insurance you can opt for.

Coverage for Foreign Health Insurance in Germany

   > EU Citizens:

If you hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you are covered for temporary stays in Germany. However, once you register as a resident, you must obtain German health insurance.

   > Non-EU Citizens:

German health insurance is typically required for obtaining a residence permit. Therefore, you need to secure German health insurance upon arrival. Exceptions exist for students, detailed below.

Statutory Health Insurance (GKV)

Statutory health insurance covers the majority of Germany’s population. Employees earning less than €69,300 annually (as of 2024) are automatically enrolled in this scheme. Contributions cover doctor visits, hospital stays, basic dental care, and prescriptions. Additional benefits include statutory accident insurance, long-term care insurance, sickness benefit, child sickness benefit, and maternity benefit.

Private Health Insurance (PKV)

Freelancers, business owners, self-employed workers, and high-wage earners (those earning over €69,300 annually) can opt for private health insurance. Approximately 10% of the population has PKV, which typically offers more comprehensive coverage, including alternative treatments and private hospitals. Contributions are risk-related and may increase over time. Switching back to statutory insurance is challenging unless there is a significant change in personal circumstances.
