Taiwan is set to become the latest Asian country to officially welcome remote workers with the introduction of the Taiwan digital nomad visa. This initiative aims to attract at least 10% of the 35 million digital nomads worldwide by offering the opportunity to stay in Taiwan for up to six months. The new visa is similar to Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa and Japan’s digital nomad visa, both of which allow stays of up to 180 days.
The Taiwan digital nomad visa is part of a broader strategy to boost Taiwan’s economy. Alongside this visa, the government has proposed other measures, such as reducing the time required to obtain permanent residency to just one year for top-tier foreign talent.
A digital nomad visa allows remote workers and sometimes their families to live abroad for a year or more. These temporary residence permits enable remote workers to immerse themselves in a foreign culture and lifestyle while maintaining their remote jobs. It’s important to note that these visas generally do not allow applicants to seek local employment, with only a few exceptions.
In some cases, digital nomad visas can lead to permanent residency after a certain number of years, making them an attractive option for those with long-term relocation goals.
While specific details about Taiwan's digital nomad visa have not yet been released, it is expected that the requirements will be similar to those of other programs in the region. Potential requirements may include:
- Valid Passport: Eligibility may be restricted to nationals who can initially enter Taiwan visa-free.
- Proof of Remote Work: Applicants may need to provide documentation proving their remote work status.
- Minimum Income Requirement: A minimum income threshold may be set to ensure applicants can comfortably live in Taiwan.
- Clean Criminal Record: As with most digital nomad visas, a clean criminal record will likely be required.
- International Health Insurance: Applicants may need to have health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in Taiwan.
For those who can’t wait for the Taiwan digital nomad visa to be implemented, it’s still possible to visit the country on a tourist visa through the visa exemption program.
