Understanding working hours and leave types in Singapore is essential for employees and employers alike.
Under the Employment Act, most employees work a maximum of:
- 8 hours daily for a 5-day workweek or 9 hours daily for a 6-day workweek.
- 44 hours weekly, excluding breaks.
Overtime pay is required for eligible employees who work more than the standard hours. Employers must pay 1.5 times the hourly rate for overtime and double the daily rate for work on rest days or public holidays.
Singaporean employees are entitled to various leave options:
Annual Leave: Starts at 7 days and increases with service.
Sick Leave: Up to 14 days, or 60 days with hospitalization.
1. Maternity Leave: 16 weeks for eligible mothers.
2. Paternity Leave: 2 weeks for eligible fathers.
3. Childcare Leave: 6 days per year for parents with young children.
Employees working more than 6 consecutive hours are entitled to a break. Those working on night shifts should have adequate rest, and companies are encouraged to create predictable schedules to reduce fatigue. A weekly rest day of 24 hours is also required.
