Chancenkarte: Germany’s New Work Visa

Germany has introduced a new visa called the Chancenkarte, or Opportunity Card, which officially opened for applications on 1 June 2024. The programme is designed to make it easier for skilled workers from outside the EU to move to Germany and look for job opportunities.

A Flexible Visa System

Unlike traditional visas that require employer sponsorship, the Germany Opportunity Card allows applicants to live in Germany for up to one year while they search for a suitable job. During this time, they are also permitted to work part-time. This flexibility gives professionals more time to explore options and settle into the local environment.

How the Points System Works

The Chancenkarte is based on a points system. Applicants are scored on factors such as:

  1. Recognised academic or professional qualifications
  2. Work experience
  3. German language ability
  4. Age and other relevant skills

A minimum of six points is needed to qualify. Applicants must also prove they can cover living costs during their stay, with at least €1,027 per month required.

Why Germany Needs Skilled Workers

Germany is currently facing labour shortages in several key sectors, including healthcare, education, engineering and manufacturing. The new visa aims to attract international talent to fill these gaps and support the country’s economic growth.

Who Can Apply

The Opportunity Card Germany is mainly for non-EU and non-Swiss citizens. Those with prior links to Germany—such as studying in the country or knowing the language—have better chances under the points system.

Application Process

More information is available on the official Make It In Germany website, which includes a self-check tool to test eligibility. Applications must be submitted in person at German embassies or consulates abroad.

The Opportunity Card represents a major step in making Germany more open to skilled workers from around the world, offering both flexibility for applicants and benefits for the country’s economy.
