KITAS, or Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas, is a Limited Stay Permit that allows foreign nationals to live in Indonesia for an extended period under specific conditions. While traditionally issued as a physical card, KITAS is now processed entirely online and referred to simply as ITAS (Izin Tinggal Terbatas) — the digital version of the same permit.

Holding a KITAS opens up several legal and practical advantages for foreign residents in Indonesia. These include:

Who Can Obtain a Temporary Stay Permit (ITAS)?

An ITAS may be issued to:

1. Foreigners holding a Temporary Stay Visa (VITAS) at immigration checkpoints
2. Children born in Indonesia to KITAS-holding parents, upon providing relevant documents
3. Crew members, captains, or foreign technicians working on ships or maritime installations within Indonesian jurisdiction
4. Foreigners applying to convert their Visit Stay Permit (ITK) to a Limited Stay Permit

ITAS Extension Eligibility

You may qualify for an ITAS extension if you fall into one of the following categories:

1. Skilled workers and professionals
2. Crew members or personnel working on vessels or maritime facilities within Indonesian waters
3. Religious workers (clergymen or clergywomen)
4. Foreign investors
5. Academic researchers or educators
6. Individuals reuniting with family
7. Persons involved in repatriation or holding a “second home” status
8. Global talents or figures invited by the government
9. Elderly individuals aged 60 or above

Special provisions apply to students and scholars. The Head of the Immigration Office can extend their ITAS for up to one year, while applicants from countries requiring a Calling Visa need approval from the Director General for longer stays.

Document Requirements for ITAS Extension

To renew an ITAS, you'll need the following core documents:

1. A valid national passport
2. ITAS details
3. An integration statement (not required for unmarried individuals under 18)
4. A sponsorship letter (if applicable)
5. ID or family card of the sponsor or person in charge
6. Documents proving close family relationships if joining a family member’s ITAS

For applications requiring a commitment statement, proof of that commitment is essential. This may include:

1. Recent bank statements (past three months)
2. Updates to the company deed (if applicable)
3. Latest financial and tax reports
4. Property tax records
5. Documentation of bond holdings or share ownership
6. Other evidence that supports your stay and confirms your financial/legal ties to Indonesia

How the Extension Process Works

Without Director General’s Approval

1. For extensions that do not require high-level approval:
2. Submit your application
3. Undergo biometric photo capture
4. Pay immigration fees
5. Wait for processing and approval by the Head of the Immigration Office
6. Receive your updated ITAS (virtual document)

With Director General’s Approval

If your extension requires central approval:

1. Submit your application and pay the required fee
2. The Immigration Office forwards your documents to the Director General within three business days
3. Approval or rejection is issued within five business days after the central office receives the documents
4. You will be notified electronically, and the virtual ITAS will be issued if approved

Application Timeline

1. Without Director General's approval: Up to 3 business days after payment
2. With Director General's approval: Up to 5 business days after receiving the application

The result — either an updated virtual ITAS or a formal rejection — is sent electronically to the applicant or sponsor.

When to Apply for an ITAS Extension

Timing your application correctly is important:

1. For ITAS with a maximum one-year validity: apply from 30 days before expiration up to the expiry date
2. For ITAS valid for over one year: apply within three months before expiration and no later than the expiration date

If you've already submitted your application and paid the fee before your ITAS expires, the process will not count as overstaying — even if the extension is granted after the original permit expires. In most cases, the extension will be issued effective the day after the original permit's expiry.
